Jack Hoffer Obituary

Jack L. Hoffer, age 77, of Duncansville, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, March 1, 2023 at UPMC Altoona. He was born August 12, 1945 at home in Windber, a son of the late Maurice F. ‘Mike’ and Mary Ellen (Lehman) Hoffer.

Surviving are six siblings: Joyce Wilt of Roaring Spring, Gloria Kelly (Lou) of Duncansville, Barbara Detrick (Don) of Duncansville, Carol Musselman of Claysburg, Terrance Hoffer of Coral Gables, FL, and Melvin Hoffer of Duncansville; an aunt, Janet Yonker of Windber; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1993, his mother in 2010, and a brother Frederick Hoffer in 1993

Jack was a 1963 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School, a 1964 graduate of Franklin School of Science & Arts, and a 1973 graduate of Penn State, where he received a bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science. He worked in a hospital lab in Philadelphia from 1973 to 1977, was a lab manager in a New York hospital from 1977 until 2000, and was lab manager in Johnstown from 2001 until retirement in 2008.

He was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal church in 2007 from Bucknell University.

Jack was Deacon at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Altoona from 2007 until 2010. He was the current Deacon at Trinity Episcopal Church in Tyrone. He was a visiting instructor at Mount Aloysius College teaching a course in immunohematology and serology. Jack was also a certified PA Master Gardener.

He was a US Air Force veteran, serving from 1966 to 1970. He was stationed in California.

Jack was a selfless volunteer and gave his time, effort, and support to numerous organizations between Altoona and Tyrone. He volunteered at Operation Our Town, Northern Blair Business Round Table, the Tyrone churches’ Meals on Wheels program, Improved Dwellings for Altoona Inc., the Seeds of Hope Garden in Tyrone, the PA Prison Society, was director of the Tyrone Food Bank, was a cook for the Salvation Army soup kitchen for 11 years, was on the committee for Tyrone Hospital Medical Advisory, was president of the Woodrow Wilson Garden, was a board member for Sylvan Acres and Washington Terrace in Tyrone, a board member of Home Nursing’s AIDS Intervention Project, and helped with many other charities and humanitarian organizations.

Jack wanted to be remembered as a faithful pilgrim.

Friends and family will be received on Monday, March. 6, 2023 from 4pm until the 7pm memorial service, officiated by Rev. Ralph Hamer, with Military Honors accorded by the Blair County Veterans Honor Guard, at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Duncansville.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Tyrone.

'Interment will take place at Alto-Reste Cemetery.
