Doris May Benton, age 94, a resident of Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, formerly of Newry, died Sunday morning, September 15, 2019 at the home. She was born January 25, 1925 in Jeannette, daughter of the late Lawrence H. and Dorthan (Loughner) Long. At the age of 17 she married the love of her life, Wilfrid G. Benton, on June 25, 1942, in Cumberland, MD, just before he went off to the US Army to serve during WWII. They shared almost 70 years of marriage before his passing on May 9, 2012.
Survived by two sons: Roderick (Julia) and Laird (Ann), both of Duncansville; two granddaughters: Stacey (Ryan) Pugh and Gillian; two sisters-in-law: Donna Boyer-Benton of Altoona and Anna Mae Helsel of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.
As the last member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Lester and Laird Long. She was also preceded in death by a grandson Jason R. Benton.
Doris was raised in Irwin, and was a graduate of Norwin High School. She worked many years at Leighty’s Farm Market, VeederRoot and the Book & Record Shop in the Altoona Logan Valley Mall. She shared many years as a devoted volunteer to the Allegheny Lutheran Home of Hollidaysburg.
She was a lifetime Lutheran and was a member of Geeseytown-Newry Evangelical Lutheran Church. She loved the Lord and her daily devotions.
Doris enjoyed trips to Florida to visit family and friends and times spent at Church Camp Sequanota Adult Retreats. She loved her two granddaughters, Stacey and Gillian, and especially their young lives and achievements.
She will be greatly missed by family, community and church friends.
Friends will be received from 6-9pm today, Tues., Sept. 17, 2019, at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., Duncansville. A service will be held at 11am on Wed., Sept. 18 at the chapel at Alto-Reste Cemetery, the Rev. Richard N. Henry, Jr., officiating. Interment will take place at Alto-Reste Cemetery.
